Using ChordWalk with Soundtrap

Soundtrap is an online Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that offers a wide range of realistic instrument sounds, editing tools, effects, and recording options.

Below, we’ll give you a quick introduction to using Soundtrap with ChordWalk so you can set up a few virtual instrument tracks and start creating. If you’d like to dive deeper, there are plenty of detailed Soundtrap tutorials available online.

One of ChordWalk’s unique features is the ability to route MIDI data from any individual creation area to a specific instrument track. This means you can control different virtual instruments independently, which opens up lots of creative possibilities.

Unfortunately, Soundtrap doesn’t currently support assigning individual MIDI ports to separate virtual tracks—something many other DAWs allow. This is a limitation on Soundtrap’s side, but we hope they’ll add this feature soon. Even with this restriction, you can still create original and meaningful compositions using ChordWalk and Soundtrap together.

In the next section, we’ll show you how to connect ChordWalk creation areas with Soundtrap, allowing you to play the sounds assigned to each channel.

You must sign up for Sound Trap.

Once you have signed up, select the Plus “Enter Studio”.

Select “Music”

Select on the Plus icon to “Add new Track”

You will now be presented with a menu of option for the track you wish to create.

Here we will select a Synth sound.

The Synth track will be presented showing a timeline.
NOTE: The Record Icon must be engaged to play and record individual Tracks in Sound Trap.

To transfer MIDI data between ChordWalk and Soundtrap, you’ll need to set up a virtual MIDI port. A great option is LoopMIDI, a free and reliable tool. For step-by-step instructions, see “Creating a Virtual Loopback MIDI Port” in the Creator’s Guide.

Once your virtual port is created, go to MIDI Device Settings in ChordWalk and activate the virtual MIDI ports.

For Soundtrap to receive MIDI data from ChordWalk, it needs to be set up to recognize the MIDI source. Open Settings, choose MIDI Settings, and then select the virtual MIDI port you created earlier.

When you open MIDI Settings, a setup window will appear showing all the MIDI devices Soundtrap can recognize. Use the up/down arrows to scroll through the list, then select the virtual loopback MIDI port you created earlier.

You are now set up to start playing a single Track in Sound Trap with ChordWalk.

Add additional Instrument tracks and use effects to build up your composition.
